Holy Unions

What is a Holy Union?

Holy Union is a Sacramental of Matrimony.  A Sacramental is an action, which closely resembles one of the Seven Sacraments.  A Sacramental does not in and of itself confer Grace, but opens up those who partake in the Sacramental to receive Grace and unites them closer to God.

Those joined in Holy Union share in the mystery of the unity and love that exists between Christ and His Church; they thus help each other to attain holiness in their life together and, if they choose, in welcoming and parenting children; and they have their own special place and gift among the people of God.  The
Union is established by a blessed covenant, the irrevocable consent that the spouses freely give to and receive from each other.

The
Union imposes total fidelity on each of them and the unbreakable unity of their bond.  Christian couples strive to nourish and develop their Holy Union together by undivided affection, which wells up from the fountain of divine love: in a merging of the human and the divine they remain faithful in body and in mind, in good times as in bad.

The ceremony consists of the Liturgy of the Word, which brings out the importance of the Christian covenantal relationship in the history of salvation and the duties and responsibilities it involves in the sanctification of the couple (and their children); consent of the contracting parties; the special blessing on the couple and their covenant; and finally the reception of Holy Communion by the couple and those present, which above all is the source of love and lifts us up into communion with our Lord and with one another.

Is a Holy Union a gay marriage?

No. Marriage is a legal contract, which often accompanies the sacrament of Matrimony.  Currently, Holy Unions are accompanied by national registry the American Catholic Church.  In general, a Certificate of Holy Union suffices as adequate proof of a domestic partnership relation.

Who can have a Holy Union?

Holy Unions are usually performed during the regular weekly Mass for registered tithing parishioners.  At least one session of pre-sacramental counseling must take place before any sacraments are conferred through Holy Innocents ACC.  (This may take place as a conference call for those residing outside of Nevada.)  If neither member of the couple is a tithing member of an ACC affiliated community, then the couple may establish church stewardship prior to the Holy Union.

Who performs the ceremony?

All clergy who serve the American Catholic Church in Nevada are validly ordained clergy in the Catholic Church. Clergy may be priests, deacons, or bishops, validly ordained with valid Apostolic Succession.

Are there fees?

Yes.  The fees vary based on service, location, time, day, clergy and so many other variables.
